Friends for Life:
Caring for Pets
Approximately 30-45 minutes
This program is to help students understand that pets
depend on people for care and affection. The goals of this activity is to
help students identify different animals, recognize that wild animals are
not pets, understand what is a pet, be able to identify different items
that can be used in pet care and how they can learn to look after a pet.

Grades 3-5 Friends for Life: The Perfect Pet
Approximately 30-45 minutes
This program is to help students understand that
choosing a pet is a big decision. The goals of the activity is to have
students list ideas to consider before getting a pet, be able to
discriminate between good homes and poor homes for a particular animal,
summarize reasons for people to pet matches and to understand that pets
are a long term commitment.

Grades 3-6 The Animal Shelter and the Community
This program could be adapted for Middle and High School Approximately 45-60 minutes
dependent on the age group
This program is to help students understand what an
animal shelter is and how it functions in the community. The goals of
this activity is to help students define the word shelter and what would
it look like for different animals and even people by listing the most
important components of what is a shelter. They will understand the
specific components of the Trempealeau County Humane Society. The group
will also discuss how people in our county find out about our shelter.
The group will be divided into smaller groups where their task will be to
complete a poster advertising the Trempealeau County Humane Society and
those posters will be put up in their school and/or their community.
